Oil Fortification
A higher percentage of pregnant women and their newborns suffer vitamin D deficiencies and more than 57% of children suffer from Vitamin A deficiency (1).
The penetration of edible oil in our daily diet is greater; hence oil fortification with vitamin A and vitamin D is feasible to reach out to a majority of population. The vegetable oils are indispensable in the human food as also in several industrial uses.
Since vitamin A and D are fat-soluble vitamins, fortification of edible oils and fats with vitamin A and D is a good strategy to address micronutrient malnutrition with simple addition and blending property and fortified oil is known to provide 25%-30% of the recommended dietary allowances for vitamins A & D with no change in the organoleptic property.
The per capita consumption of vegetable oils is rising continuously and likely to touch 16.97 kg/year requiring 20.4 million tonnes of vegetable oil in 2017(2).
